We’re moving some themes

Due to the changing state of Envato’s role of providing Support Packs as an up-sell feature on ThemeForest, we’ve had to look to resolve a few resounding issues surrounding this new “product”.

Although a decent majority of authors seem to oppose this move, Envato is pretty dead-set on making this happen. They foresee lots of additional income for authors and themselves – though I personally presume that the latter will benefit multiple times over.

One of the biggest issues I personally see with this move is that authors are forced to leave their products on ThemeForest for a minimum of six months, or until the last buyer’s support pack expires (up to 12 months).

Basically, the only way around this is for authors to state that they DO NOT support their item – and who would do that?

Here’s an example.

Say we uploaded an awesome portfolio theme like Designer, tomorrow. We’re legally obligated to leave the theme on ThemeForest for 6 months as soon as a single customer purchases the theme. Now, say a year or two from tomorrow, we would like to retire the theme and move it off of the marketplace.

To do just that, we’ll need to mark the theme as “Not Supported”, then wait either 6 months to 1 year (depending on when the last “supported” purchase was made) to physically remove the item. Envato’s locking us in because they know there’s competition that’s doing things quite a bit differently – and in this case, different is better.

So where do we go from here?

I’ve made the decision to move our lower converting themes from ThemeForest, instead to sell locally on our website and on Creative Market.

We’ll be moving Base, Spruce, Trim, Weblog and Macho. We’ll still plan to publish selected products on ThemeForest, but I have a sense that the marketplace there is not heading in quite the right direction.

How does this affect you?

It doesn’t! If you’ve purchased your theme from ThemeForest you can simply request a theme license key, and plug that into your Theme License WP admin page to get support and updates. You’ll also be able to login to your ThemeBeans dashboard and download the theme and entire package contents.

As usual, if you have any questions, feel free to personally email me via rich(at)themebeans.com and I’ll be more than happy to chat.

  • Base, Execute, Spruce, Trim, Weblog and Harbor will soon be available on our website & Creative Market, not ThemeForest.
  • You can download your theme file via your ThemeBeans dashboard upon purchase verification.
